The Black Devils From Wattstax?

Has anyone seen the concert documentry Wattstax? In the audience they show a quick pic of some guys wearing jackets. They are wearing jackets that have the words Black Devils on the back. This was from 1972. Was this a gang? If so,did they join up with the crips or bloods alliance? http://www.pbs.or...

Re: Something For The Dancers

I don't think I see anything new here. Did I miss something? That Bay Area style isn't new but many people outside of the Bay didn't see their style. Maybe it was because Southern Cali dancers had more media(Soul Train etc). I hadn't seen their style before until a few years ago. This crew was from...

Re: Something For The Dancers

Bay Area Strutting is an evolution of late 1970s Los Angeles pop locking (i.e. Fred Berry, Boogaloo Shrimp, and others) and NYC body rocking & waving (i.e. Mr. Wave, Rock Steady Crew cats, etc.). Actually the Bay Area style that guy is demonstrating/teaching is something seperate from the styles yo...

Here's a clip of a dancer named Money B from San Jose giving some lessons on their Bay Area Strutting style dancing that was popular back in the 70's,80's on to today.

Were any of you a part of any dance crews back in the day?

Re: Is Foreign Aid Keeping Africa Poor?

I'd assume that most people would agree that utimately how well a country develops will come down to the policies of their government. Now if the aid being given to these governments is being viewed as "free money" then I can see how this free money through aid would cause too many governments not t...

I hope they go slow with this and consider increasing privatization similar to how other former communist countries did it like Estonia and Poland. I also hope the Castro gov't understands the importance of having clear laws like property rights to determine who actually owns what and how that plays...

Re: Reducing Black Unemployment

I'd be curious to see how Bob Johnson's version of the Rooney Rule will play out. I can see how increasing the number of blacks in corporate positions can be a good thing. With workforce demographics changing in America I actually think it could become easier for more black-Americans and other non w...

Re: Why Don't More Blacks Own Businesses?

I want to add thing angle. Lets just say that the economic progress of the Black community should be tied to both the public and private sectors. The problem with Blacks is that we put more emphasis on the public sector or gov't for dealing with our economic issues. Since the 60's and 70's the agend...

Yeah,if youth unemployment plays a big factor in gang formation then I'd think one of the solutions would be for more business development going on in Black communities as a way to deal with this high unemployment.

Re: Jobs & Crime Reduction

I don't directly blame race for the troubles found in Africa or even African Americans; I blame dysfunctional people... I think it can be argued that this has more to do with the types of policies adopted by both Black-Americans and Africans. Both groups have a recent history of adopting socialisti...

Re: Jobs & Crime Reduction

Basically,I don't see this reversing for Blacks until Blacks do more to affect our economic problems like poverty and joblessness. Blacks will have to create more jobs for ourselves and not rely on gov't welfare for every economic problem. Welfare, though needed, should be seondary to Black business ...

Re: Jobs & Crime Reduction

I've read other interviews by sociologist William Julius Wilson where he seemed to be saying that one reason reducing unemployment in an area can reduce crime is the affect that employment can have on how people utilize their time. Other than providing legal money for people a job helps to shape how...

Re: Black & Native American Slave Owners

Found something interesting on Black slave owners. A small group of scholars has questioned the benevolent premises of Woodson's thesis. In 1942, Luther P. Jackson reiterated the Woodson thesis that free black masters were primarily benevolent. Yet he also asserted that after 1850, the institution b...
