Shoes on wires

Unread post by Yohann » January 30th, 2011, 12:44 pm

What is the real signification (if there is one) of shoes hanging from electric wires?
I asked 10 dudes, and had 10 different answers: it's to define gangs boundaries, to pay homage to dead homies, to get rid of old shoes, to have fun...

No significance what so ever. It's not even that common.

I guess it depends on the person who does it, or where you are at. I'm in Miami and there are shoes on wires all over the place in suburban neighborhoods. I doubt that had anything to do with gangs..considering that there are rather large expensive houses only a few feet away lol.

It was my understanding that it signaled to any outsiders, that the particular area where the shoes are hanging, is already occupied and that any one trying to set up shop, better beware. Now this was in New Orleans, so it may mean different things in different places. Just like the tear drop tatoo.

Heard it was to let people know that the house with the shoes hanging in front was flipping work, anybody could just roll up and pick up but this was back like 10 years ago

I always thought it was just a fun way to get rid of old shoes. To see if you could do it. It takes some skill and luck to get them up there. Then, once they're up there, you know others are going to see it and it'll be hard to take down; either with heavy winds or someone going up there with a JLG lift.

I can't imagine how long it would take to just stand out there trying to get the shoes to hang from the power line. Must look foolish to any passer by. And imagine if a cop drives by lol.
