With two momentous votes on gender equality on the horizon, many people are examining the issue of gay prejudice, including Hip Hop, in its own way. For A$AP Rocky, the issue was sprung upon him as a reaction to his sense of fashion.
The attention was especially critical over his appearance at BET's 106 & Park in what many perceived to be a woman's dress, which Rocky explained was an oversized designer t-shirt. That didn't dispel the media's taunting him with the epithet of "Fashion Killa," but neither did Rocky apologize for his sartorial choices.
“Fashion was a natural thing to me,” Rocky told Interview Magazine, as a New Yorker. “Fashion was about standing out as an individual—and it helped me get the attention that most people try to get with publicity stunts or by doing other crazy things. But I just let the attention come to me naturally, and I think some of that has to do with my fashion.”
As for "the gay thing," Rocky says, "It’s 2013, and it’s a shame that, to this day, that topic still gets people all excited. It’s crazy. And it makes me upset that this topic even matters when it comes to hip-hop, because it makes it seem like everybody in hip-hop is small-minded or stupid—and that's not the case." He proudly calls himself "the least homophobic cat in rap" and encourages his followers to treat others the same.
