The leader had an incurable disease and used to bite his tounge and spit blood on rival gang members to infect them.

The Dead Rabbits was a group that died out in the early 1900's, but before then controlled much of Hell's Kitchen, the Irish neighbourhood. The Dead Rabbits pretty well formed into what is known as the Hell's Kitchen gang which was run by Owney Madden. SOme of you may know the group from the 70's run by Jimmy Coonan. Read the book The Westies if you want more, a great read.

He was originally born in Liverpool, England the son of an irish father i believe. He moved to New York has as a kid and joined the Gophers (the main Irish gang in Hells Kitchen) and quickly became a force. It is rumoured he had 10 murders before he was 18 and he earned the nickname "The Killer". His most famous murder which result in a police chase and i BELIEVE him being shot was when he shot a man to death on a crowded bus or train(can't remember) for disrespecting his girlfriend. He went to war with a rival Irish organization and was almost shot at his club, The Cotton Club. You may have heard of Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll the Irishmen with the small crew who were robbing from him and mainly Duth Schultz. Coll began kidnapping his crew members and even kidnapped his right hand man at one point. Coll called Madden from a pay phone at a drug store to further threaten and Madden kept him on the line long enough for one of his police connections to find out where he was calling from, a black car pulled up and a gunman got out and practically cut Coll in half from a THompson blast. Madden was arrested for tax evasion i believe and did some time in Sing Sing and when he got out retired and moved to Ark. Hot Springs a rich man. Many gangsters would come and stay with him when things got hot and he was one of the few gangsters to dead in bed peacefully.

He is one of my favourite prohibition gangsters, hope that helps.
