Well, the offical boss Peter Gotti is in prison. So is the official underboss Arnold Squitieri. So is the official consigliere Joseph Corozzo. So are the most recent acting boss and acting underboss Jackie D'Amico and Dom Cefalu. So is one of the family's top captains Nick Corozzo. Usually in this situation the leadership simply goes to the captains as a whole until a new administration is put in place.
Do you think, in your opinion, that the Commission has met since then?
Possibly. But we probably won't know unless someone flips in the future and reveals when it happened.

Would you guess that back in the days before the FBI was hounding them there's be a chance for a violent power struggle? I imagine there is little chance of that happening today, but do you think there's any chance for powerful captains to maneuver around each other, possibly bump some off here and there?

Well, like I said before, there really hasn't been a major war between two seperate families since Prohibition. Just about every conflict since then has been internal within a single family. But even those have gone by the way side for the most part. But there are obviously still power struggles. Or, to be more precise, cases where key guys have to be taken out to maintain control. What have generally be thought to be the two most disciplined LCN organizations - the Genovese family and the Chicago Outfit - have continued to show that they are willing and able to take out people when they have to. For instance, Ralph Coppola was a Genovese acting captain who oversaw the family's rackets at the Javit's Convention Center. In 1998 he was reportedly killed for skimming and other reasons. His body still hasn't been found. Al Bruno was the Genovese captain who oversaw the family's rackets in Massachusetts. He was killed in 2002 because he reportedly wasn't bringing in enough money for the higher ups in New York. Another Genovese acting captain, Larry Ricci, oversaw one of the ILA locals on the New Jersey waterfront for the family. He was killed in 2005 because he refused to follow instructions that he take a plea deal and not go to court when he was indicted with ILA officials a few years ago. The Genovese big wigs wanted to foster the idea that the mob was gone from the ports and a mobster sitting next to ILA officials at the defense table would go against that. So Ricci was killed and found in the trunk of a car not too long afterwards. In Chicago, high-level mob associate Ronald Jarrett was gunned down outside his home in 1999 because he reportedly wanted to take over the Outfit's South Side crew. In 2001 Outfit Lieutenant Anthony "the Hatchet" Chiaramonti was killed, allegedly because of a dispute over gambling operations. And in 2006 another Outfit Lieutenant Anthony "Little Tony" Zizzo was disappeared. He was obviously killed by the mob but the reasons are still not clear at this point.

I guess that depends on how you define "big." Here are some of the more well known mob hits (or near hits) in recent years -

1997 - Buffalo family captain John "Johnny Pops" Papalia killed.
1997 - Chicago Outfit associate Herbert "Fat Herbie" Blitzstein killed.
1998 - Genovese captain Ralph Coppola disappeared.
1999 - Philadelphia captain Ronald "Ronnie" Turchi killed.
1999 - Canadian mob captain Gerlando "George from Canada" Sciascia killed.
1999 - Colombo underboss William "Wild Bill" Cutolo disappeared.
1999 - Chicago Outfit associate Ronald "Ronnie" Jarrett killed.
2001 - Chicago Outfit lieutenant Anthony "Tony the Hatch" Chiaramonti killed.
2001 - Philadelphia associate John "Johnny" Beebe wounded.
2001 - Bonanno associate Frank Santoro killed.
2001 - Detroit associate John Jarjosa Jr. killed.
2002 - Philadelphia soldier Raymond "Long John" Martorano killed.
2003 - Colombo soldier Joseph "Joe Camp" Campanella wounded.
2003 - Philadelphia associate John "Johnny Gongs" Casasanto killed.
2003 - Genovese captain Adolfo "Big Al" Bruno killed.
2004 - Bonanno associate Rudolph "Rudy Pizzolo" killed.
2004 - Genovese Nicholas Cirillo disappeared.
2005 - Genovese captain Lawrence "Larry" Ricci killed.
2006 - Chicago Outfit lieutenant Anthony "Little Tony" Zizzo disappeared.
2006 - Gambino captain Carmine “Top Tomato” Sciandra wounded.
2007 - Gambino associate Robert DeCicco wounded.
2007 - Genovese soldier Rudolph "Rudy Cueball" Izzi killed.
2007 - Lucchese solider Frank Lagano killed.
2008 - Genovese associate William Marcucci killed.

There are a lot of murders on the periphery of the mob that you never hear about. Below is a link to mob related deaths from 1991-2004.

New Orleans Has a New Boss

Michael Tufaro seems to have taken control of the New Orleans Mafia along with his brother Joseph "Joey" Tufaro. The Tufaro brothers have a five decade family history in the New Orleans Mob. They also have family ties to the New York Colombo Family that go back to the 80's. Here are a few links and some other infomation that supports this line of thinking.
The New Orleans crime family has or had an impact throughout all Louisiana and several other southern states like Missouri, Texas and Mississippi. It has an estimated 10 "made" members left and many more associates. Some people say it is almost dead; others claim that it is one of the most powerful Mafia crime families in the United States today. It has been said that they are still active but these reports are unsubstantiated.Since Hurricane Katrina two brothers Joseph and Michael Tufaro have emereged as a new force in New Orleans. Michael Tufaro[1] has a long history of run ins with the law and was acussed of being part of an attempt to "fix" a federal trial[2] as far back as 1988. He was released from prison in 2003 for a kidnaping sceme[3] where Tufaro would kidnap local drug dealers and hold them for ransom. They also have family ties to New York[4] and the Colombo Family. The Tufaro brothers own[5] and control a large residential sub-divison that has resulted in a RICO[6] case being brought against them it seems as though their futre is still in question. We will be waiting and watching to see if this is the return of the "old school" New Orleans mafia.
