This is the forum for those who believe that there are other options to gangs and violence and hope to see young people make better choices about their future. Where does change begin?

If you have the time, why not?

Yes it does. That's an incredible history. Many ex cons have similar problems, but don't have the dicipline to reinvent themselves through education. Many employers are gun shy about hiring ex cons, because so many have been ripped off by ex con employees, or they have heard of someone who has. It's just easier for them to say some BS and not be bothered.

It's hard out there for someone with no criminal background, let alone someone trying to make a fresh start out of the pen, but it can be done.

I wish you well in your academic career and hope you will continue to inspire others with silmilar backgrounds.

I am going to go on to my Ph.D. I am really interested in a program at UC-Irvine.

Thanks for the encouragement. It's been hard. It's like you have to transfer the gangsta mentality to a different world. No matter how many times or how many ways the enemy came at you. If you weren't dead, you became stronger and more determined to overcome and win. So you take that to the "legit" world. No matter how many times they try to knock you down, you show them that you can play by their rules and still one up them. The only difference is- on the streets you had your homies but when you cross-over to the "norm" you have to go at it alone. It is good to know that there are others out there who are sincerely interested in the elevation and encouragement of others.

It all depends. Some felonies carry over into adulthood. Do you have an attorney?

I used to have trouble with getting a job due to my criminal record, but I was finaly hired by a good company, and been with them since.

You just have to find someone who will give you a chance.

Anybody else discriminated from employment because they are or were in a gang?

What are your plans now?
